This class is held in back to back with the Soils Compaction class. Dave Kuniega, the instructor has notified us that this class is ONLY for those who are in need of certification in handling the Nuclear Gauge. It was discussed that due to all of the paperwork that Dave has to do for Hazmat and NRC certification, that perhaps there should be a specific distribution list put together to announce the class to, and also that perhaps it should be for "select attendees" only.

3/7/12 Darlene -- Per today's phone conversation with Dave Kuniega, not everyone who attends this class is there for certification. Some attendees are just there to audit class and are not required to take the test (example: pony drivers). Only students who fail the test get an incomplete in TP. TP reflects the class status and has nothing to do with certification.

NOTE: For classes scheduled in 2013, add a class reminder for project manager to discuss with vendor/instructor the showing of PennDOT's Safety Partnership Agreement video at beginning of class. Video is available on Training Calendar.

General Information

Summary:
This training is to educate attendees on all aspects of safely handling nuclear gauges during their operation. PennDOT currently has 41 nuclear gauges that the Districts use in their construction activities. To operate these gauges the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) requires that these gauges are being used safely as per DEP requirements. The BOCM oversees the safe usage requirements of DEP and works with each PennDOT district to make sure that these gauges are being used safely. The attendees for this course are usually the nuclear gauge operators and the designated district supervisor who oversees the gauges at the district level. Two written multiple choice tests are given at the end of the training course to reinforce concepts given during the training. Training is mandatory for nuclear gauge operators every two years.

Learning Outcomes:
Basic knowledge of radiation theory pertaining to nuclear gauges.
Basic knowledge of DEP regulations pertaining to radiation exposure.
Basic knowledge pertaining to the safe transportation, handling, usage, and security of nuclear gauges.
Basic information of the components and proper usage of a nuclear gauge.

Teaching Method:
Instructor led.

Target Audience:
Districts that currently have the 41 nuclear gauges for use in construction activities.

Special Materials:
Participants need to bring a calculator to class.

Final Exam:
