General Information

Summary:
New technology in the asphalt pavement areas has emerged to result in cost savings and environmentally friendly solutions. Flexible pavements are traditionally designed to limit load-related cracking. Discussion will be provided on the use of an endurance limit as a mixture property for flexible pavement, which is the tensile strain below which no fracture or fatigue damage occurs. The use of endurance limits have the potential to reduce the overall thickness by approximately 25%. The use of porous pavements will also be presented. Porous pavements allow water to drain through the pavement surface into a stone base and infiltrate into the soils below the pavement.
Thin lift asphalt overlays, and the uses of Ground Tire Rubber will be discussed. Thin lift asphalt overlays provide an increased smoothness and a quieter ride than other surface treatments and more durability, due to slight structural enhancement to the pavement in the long term. Ground Tire Rubber (GTR) is derived from recycling auto and small truck tires. Environmental and performance benefits can be obtained from recycling of waste materials for pavements.

Learning Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, the attendee will:
1. Provide a brief overview of the use of endurance limit as a mixture property.
2. Discuss the uses of porous pavements to ensure more effective drainage.
3. Discuss advantages of thin lift overlays.
4. Present the changes in Ground Tire Rubber modified mixes process.

Target Audience:
All professional licensees in PennDOT and anyone interested in learning about Alternate Asphalt Pavement Technology.

Final Exam:
No
