Learning Outcomes:
What participants should expect to gain from this webinar:
What constitutes Smart intersection design? Well – it’s essentially about using the available
tools and techniques to assess a full array of alternatives and ultimately make smart decisions
regarding implementing new or improved intersections. This includes considering a variety of
intersection forms, some of which may be thought of as “alternative” or “innovative” (such as
the median U-turn, roundabout, displaced left-turn and other designs). As transportation agencies
strive to improve safety and mobility and deliver efficient improvements through innovation and
cost-effective capital investments, some have adopted systemic processes for assessing and
evaluating intersection design and control strategies. Smart intersection design is exercising
sound professional judgment with the analytics necessary to balance operational performance,
impacts, safety and costs. As a Safety & Design Engineer with the Federal Highway
Administration Office of Technical Services / Resource Center, Mark Doctor will share his
perspectives and experiences in an hour long presentation on smart intersection design. Mr.
Doctor will present examples and discuss tools for combining innovative strategies to reduce
congestion and improve safety for all road users and modes.
