This course provides an introduction to the operation and logic of PennDOT's PAPIER software used for bridge pier substructure analysis and design. Course content includes an overview of the PAPIER program, pertinent pier design code provisions in AASHTO and the Design Manual-Part 4 specifications, and program input parameters, output and results. Software use will be demonstrated on an example application.

Learning Outcomes:

• List the problem types and code methodologies covered by the program;
• Identify critical AASHTO and Design Manual-Part 4 specification provisions governing pier design;
• Prepare input files for running the program based on the current User's Manual;
• Provide a general explanation of the program's calculation and solution methods
• Interpret and understand program output results as they relate to code checks, performance ratios, and adequacy of pier elements for strength and serviceability.

Prerequisites:
Familiarity with bridge analysis and design concepts (especially for substructures) and knowledge of the current specification criteria.

Target Audience:
Engineers and technicians responsible for pier design on bridge structures. The course is suitable for entry level personnel; however there are sufficient advanced topics for more experienced designers.
