General Information

Summary:
Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act is the chief legislation that protects historic buildings and structures and archaeological sites on Federal-aid Projects. Unlike other environmental legislation, Section 106 is a process and the outcome does not result in a permit. This webinar will guide the participant through an overview of the Section 106 process. Special emphasis will be placed on the role of scoping in scheduling; consulting parties and the public; and, how the Department and FHWA is treating one particular historic resource – historic bridges

Learning Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, the attendee will be able to:
1. List the basic steps in Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act
2. Provide a working definition of “consultation.”
3. List and discuss the roles and responsibilities of the main consulting parties.
4. Discuss the consequences between establishing the project schedule without reference to the scoping field view results.
5. Discuss Federal Highway’s and the Department’s responsibilities toward the preservation of historic bridges.
