General Information

Summary:
Participants will be able to understand the detailing required for preparation of Contract Drawings and review of Shop Drawings for Metal Structures.

Learning Outcomes:
1. Standards - Welding Standards - List the different AWS Specifications and their intended use. These include:
• AWS D1.1 Structural Welding Code—Steel
• AWS D1.2 Structural Welding Code—Aluminum
• AWS D1.3 Structural Welding Code—Sheet Steel
• AWS D1.4 Structural Welding Code—Reinforcing Steel
• AWS D1.5 Bridge Welding Code
• AWS D1.6 Structural Welding Code—Stainless Steel
• AWS A2.4 Standard Symbols for Welding, Brazing, and Nondestructive Examination
• AWS A3.0 Standard Welding Terms and Definitions
• AWS A5.23 Specification for Low-Alloy Steel Electrodes and Fluxes for Submerged Arc Welding
2. Standards -PennDOT Standards - Review PennDOT Standards used for designing and detailing metal structures on PennDOT projects. These include:
• BC-753M – Steel Girder Details
• BC-754M – Steel Diaphragms
• BD-641M thru BD-650M – Sign Structures
• BC-741M thru BD-747M – Sign Structures
• Publication 408M
• DM-4 Appendix B
3. Welding -Welding Basics - Identify the basic welding information, such as:
• Weld Symbols
• Weld Types
• Joint Types
• Welding Positions
Also, describe the different welding processes and their appropriate use.
4. Welding - Weld Detailing - Describe the most common weld types used: fillet welds, partial joint penetration groove welds (PJP) and complete joint penetration groove welds (CJP).
5. Welding - Weld Detailing - Differentiate the minimum and maximum weld sizes for a given detail and understand the detailing associated with minimum weld sizes.
6. Welding - Weld Detailing - Locate the required detailing of welded connections on contract plans.
7. Testing - Welding Testing - Choose the non-destructive testing methods and understand which method or combination of methods is appropriate for a given detail. These methods include:
• Magnetic Particle Testing (MT)
• Liquid Penetrate Testing (PT)
• Radiographic Testing (RT)
• Ultrasonic Testing (UT)
8. Testing - CVN Testing - Indicate the components that require CVN testing and identify how they are specified on the Contract Drawings.
9. Shop Drawing Review – Procedures & Specifications - Review the Welding Procedure Specification (WPS) and Welder Qualification requirements for certified welding on PennDOT projects in order to respond to requests for changes in weld types or procedures.
10. Shop Drawing Review – Past Problems - Be cognizant of welding material and other areas that have historically been problematic and/or missed during the Shop Drawing Review Process.
