General Information

Summary:
This one-hour executive overview reviews the Predictive Methods methodology described in Part C of the Highway Safety Manual. Several brief examples are reviewed that illustrate how the methodology can help to inform safety-related decisions made during project design.
This course provides the full, detailed methodology for determining the safety performance of the geometric design of intersections, two-lane rural roads and multilane arterials. This methodology is based upon large-scale definitive research and includes crash prediction models for total crashes and cross-section related crashes.
Lane width, shoulder width, roadside hazard ratings, traffic volume (exposure), access density (driveways) and other characteristics are incorporated into the methodology. The course also provides detailed examples of safety performance prediction for highway segments and intersections.

Learning Outcomes:
Participants can identify how the Highway Safety Manual can be used in making design decisions.
Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to:
•Describe how the Highway Safety Manual can be used in making design decisions
•Recognize the safety effects of geometric design features
•Predict the safety performance of intersections, two-lane rural roads and multi-lane rural arterials
•Compare alternative designs based upon an assessment of the safety effects of geometric design features

Final Exam:
No
