General Information

Summary:
The goal of the Pavement ME Design Workshop (application) course is to provide training on the use of the Pavement ME Design software for new and rehabilitated pavement design. The course focuses on rehabilitation of rigid and flexible pavements using features included in the new Backcalculation tool. Additional design strategies include: composite pavement design, semi-rigid pavements, and use of unique materials.

Learning Outcomes:
1. Learn how to utilize the Backcalculation Tool in establishing rehabilitation strategies using the Pavement ME Design software
2. Comparison of rehabilitation input levels 1 and 2.
3. Execute typical design strategies used by PennDOT for both new and rehabilitated pavement design.
a. Rehabilitation design strategies for asphalt concrete pavements.
b. Rehabilitation design strategies for PCC pavements.
c. Composite pavement design
d. Semi-Rigid pavement design
4. Other features included in Course in support of software application:
a. Set up and use the Optimization Feature.
b. Select design resilient modulus from repeated load resilient modulus test results – AASHTO T 307.

Teaching Method:
Application of software use; minimum lecture on Design Process and Theory/ Instructor Led

Prerequisites:
some familiarity with the Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide Manual of Practice (MEPDG MOP)

Target Audience:
Engineers that are involved in pavement design and in collecting the data in support of that design (asphalt concrete, PCC, unbound materials and soils, traffic, etc.) for new and rehabilitated asphalt concrete and PCC pavements.

Special Materials:
Laptop with the MEPDG software or PennDOT to supply desktop version with access to the MEPDG software by the participants.

Final Exam:
No
