General Information

Summary:
Geosynthetic Reinforced Soil Integrated Bridge Systems (GRS-IBS) is a form of accelerated bridge construction (ABC) that lowers cost, slashes construction time, improves durability, and increases safety—all at the same time.
GRS-IBS technology uses alternating layers of compacted granular fill material and fabric sheets of geotextile reinforcement to provide support for the bridge. GRS-IBS also provides a smooth transition from the bridge onto the roadway, and alleviates the bump at the bridge problem caused by uneven settlement between the bridge and approaching roadway. The technology offers unique advantages in the construction of small bridges, including; reduced construction time and cost (with costs reduced 25 to 60 percent from conventional construction methods), easy to build with common equipment and materials, and flexible design that's easily modified in the field for unforeseen site conditions, including utilities, obstructions, existing structures, variable soil conditions, and weather.
The specifics of this technology will be discussed including advantages and disadvantages, site considerations, design methodology and construction methodology.

Learning Outcomes:
Knowledge of the advantages and disadvantages of GRS-IBS technology. Understanding of the basic design principles. Understanding of the construction process.

Prerequisites:
Basic level bridge construction, maintenance or design knowledge

Target Audience:
local governments, local engineers, construction, maintenance, bridge designers, geotechnical engineers, local technical assistance program coordinators

Final Exam:
No

Continuing Education Credits

Awarding continuing education credits (PDH/CEU/CEH) to a training course or other training event does not imply or guarantee that the training course/event is approved by the Pennsylvania State Registration Board of Professional Engineers, Geologists and Land Surveyors.

According to Pennsylvania Act 25, “Credit determination for activities…shall be the responsibility of the licensee.  Continuing professional competency obtained by a licensee should maintain, improve or expand skills or knowledge obtained prior to initial licensure, including law and ethics applicable to the profession, or develop new and relevant skills and knowledge.”

For informational purposes only:1 CEU is equal to 10 hours of instruction
1 CEH is equal to 1 hour of instruction
