General Information

Summary:
In accordance with the PA Worker Community Right to Know Act, PennDOT employees who are exposed to chemicals within the workplace or who perform work utilizing chemical products are made aware of any potential hazards related to those products. Course content includes proper labeling methods to identify hazardous substances and how to review Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) or Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for information regarding the specific hazards, proper storage and handling methods, personal protective equipment recommendations and appropriate first aid for exposures. The required annual posting of the Hazardous Substance Survey Form (HSSF) and its content is discussed. The PennDOT MSDS Intranet site is presented. Effective 2013, information was added to this course regarding the Globally Harmonized System (GHS) and resulting changes to SDS and container labeling

Learning Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, learners will be able to:
1) Understand how to identify chemical hazards through proper chemical
labeling and the use of MSDS or SDS.
2) Understand how to ensure safe handling, usage and storage of
chemicals to minimize risk of related injuries and illnesses.
3) Understand the importance of an accurate chemical inventory and
required annual HSSF posting.
4) Learn how to access any MSDS or SDS from the local contact person or
the PennDOT MSDS Intranet site.
5) Effective 2013, understand the transition from NFPA 704 to the
