General Information
Summary:
This 90-minute workshop provides a comprehensive discussion of winter weather impacts in the Commonwealth. We’ll examine the differing types of winter events that affect the region, and how impacts vary in different parts of the state. While not overly technical, some basic meteorology will be covered (like a mini “Weather 101” course) so that managers and other decision-makers will better understand how winter storms evolve across the region. (Workshop may last up to two hours, including questions from attendees.
Learning Outcomes:
-Understand how winter climate and storms varies across the Commonwealth.
-Understand all winter weather terminology, as used in official NWS winter storm issuances.
-Gain understanding of how temperature varies throughout a winter storm and how precipitation type is influenced by temps at the surface and aloft.
-Recognize the 8 different types of winter events that affect the region, and understand how these storms evolve.
-Learn of the common winter weather “surprises” that often catch forecasters and DOT workers off guard.
-Gain a deeper understanding of how to use weather radar, including knowledge of radar’s weaknesses and common misrepresentations.
-Learn how/why the quality of weather forecasts can vary from various public and private sources.
