General Information

Summary:
The Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response Standard (HAZWOPER) applies to distinct groups of employers and their employees. This includes any employees who are exposed* or potentially exposed to hazardous substances -- including hazardous waste -- and who are engaged in one of the following operations
•Clean-up operations -- required by a governmental body, involving hazardous substances -- that are conducted at uncontrolled hazardous waste sites;
•Corrective actions involving clean-up operations at sites covered by the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act of 1976 (RCRA);
•Voluntary clean-up operations-- at sites recognized by federal, state, local, or other governmental body as uncontrolled hazardous waste sites; and
•Emergency response operations-- for releases of, or substantial threats of release of, hazardous substances regardless of the location of the hazard.

Learning Outcomes:
Following this course the participants will be able to:
•Identify the names of personnel and alternates responsible for site safety and health;
•Identify safety, health and other hazards present on the site;
•Don and the use of personal protective equipment;
•Identify work practices by which the employee can minimize risks from hazards;
•Understand the safe use of engineering controls and equipment on the site;
•Know the medical surveillance requirements including at hazardous waste sites and recognition of symptoms and signs which might indicate over exposure to hazards; and
•Identify the contents of the site safety and health plan.

Prerequisites:
OSHA 24-hour or 40-hour HAZWOPER Training

Target Audience:
All Department personnel who 1) Are onsite at one or more hazardous waste sites for 30 days or more a year. [Note: On-site for 1 hr or more constitutes- one day.], 2) Dons a respirator, or 3) Is exposed to hazardous substances above the OSHA PEL.
