Summary: | This one-day workshop on the IIG designs is aimed at state DOT and local agency staff to assist in understanding their applicability criteria, safety performance, basic design considerations, access management, pedestrian and other key considerations. About half of all severe crashes in the U.S. are intersection related. Left-turns represent a large portion of the intersection safety concern. As part of the safety focus area of the Every Day Counts (EDC) initiative, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) is promoting several proven techniques to improve the safety of intersections by strategically eliminating or relocating the left-turn conflicts. Transportation agencies that apply the intersection and interchange geometrics under this initiative can reduce crashes and greatly enhance the efficiency of moving traffic, often times with substantial cost savings and accelerated project delivery.

Learning Outcomes: | Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to: • Identify why Roundabouts, U-Turn Intersections, Displaced Left Turn Intersection, Diverging Diamond Interchange work and current locations in US • What qualifies as a good location to consider an IIG Design • ROW impacts • Public Involvement Strategies • How Geometry affects Traffic Control Options • Effects of Spacing between Intersections • Geometric considerations at intersections for pedestrians, bicycles, trucks, motorcycles, transit and the elderly • Identify constructability to consider sequence of work and impacts to traffic during work, lighting, landscaping and maintenance considerations • Identify corridors with multiple IIG Design and how it interacts with conventional designs
