General Information

Summary:
This 1.5 day workshop will focus on the evaluation, selection, and design of stormwater control measures (SCMs) that are appropriate for transportation systems. The expected performance as well as the construction and maintenance requirements for vegetated (e.g. swales and rain gardens) and non-vegetated SCMs (infiltration trenches and permeable pavements) will be discussed. A tour of Villanova University’s many SCMs, which are all retrofits, will enhance the participants understanding of SCM management and applications to transportation projects. The attendees will apply their knowledge of SCMs using by creating a conceptual design using current PennDOT projects.

Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course, attendees will:
•Know how to evaluate and select the most appropriate stormwater control measure (SCM) for a new or existing transportation projects.
•Understand the operational constraints for various SCMs and appropriateness of multiple treatment systems.
•Understand and consider the maintenance requirements of various SCMs and incorporate sustainable aspects in the designs.

Teaching Method:
Classroom instruction; SCM tour; breakout session for conceptual design development.

Prerequisites:
Understanding of stormwater management system operations and knowledge of the regulatory environment of stormwater management will be helpful.

Target Audience:
Department and business partner engineers involved with the design or design reviews of stormwater control measures for transportation projects. Construction engineers may find this course beneficial.

Special Materials:
Participants should wear comfortable clothes and shoes. Given the requirement for SCM tour, dress appropriate for walking outside should be considered.

Final Exam:
