General Information

Summary:
Join staff from the Pennsylvania State Historic Preservation Office and PennDOT to discuss appropriate treatments and techniques for the rehabilitation of historic bridges. This workshop will cover a variety of bridge types, such as covered bridges, stone arch bridges, metal truss bridges and concrete arch bridges. The workshop considers the Secretary of the Interior's Standards and Guidelines for rehabilitating historic properties and applies them to historic bridges. The workshop will present character defining features and appropriate treatments for preserving features while accommodating the project purpose and need.

Learning Outcomes:
1) Identify key character defining features of common bridge types
2) Identify the features that need to be retained for a bridge to retain its significance and where replication is acceptable
3) Understand the Secretary of the Interior's Standards and how they may be applied to historic bridges
4) Identify tools and techniques that help to balance purpose and need, including introduction of new elements, without compromise to historic engineering significance

Special Materials:
Attendees are encouraged to bring examples to share of successful historic bridge rehabilitation projects where purpose and need was met while retaining significant features.
