General Information

Summary:
Required for District personnel to be certified to file PUC Applications. Detailed instruction provided on processes for managing Grade Crossing projects (Safety and Highway/Bridge) outlined in Publication 371. Topics include programming & planning; design; reimbursement agreement & PUC related processes; construction; and closing out project. Participants to bring Publication 371 and several, actual projects (both types for discussion and in-class examples.

Learning Outcomes:
As a result of the training and passing the exam, participants will be certified by Central Office to complete the following tasks for both Grade Crossing Safety and Highway/Bridge projects:
- File PUC Applications
- Issue design and construction notices-to-proceed
- Approve railroad’s selected, low-bid contractor
- Explain the role and responsibilities of the District Grade Crossing Engineer/Administrator.
- Identify the project and contract requirements of a highway/bridge project involving railroads or a Section 130 Safety project.

Prerequisites:
Minimally, several months’ experience in the position of DGCE/A with exposure to most aspects of the position; or experience assisting DGCE/A with completing specific items as part of overall process of managing grade crossing projects.

Target Audience:
District Grade Crossing Engineers/Administrators (DGCE/A) and others who assist or supervise them. Each District should have at least two people certified by Central Office. This course is best suited to those who have been doing grade crossing-related job tasks for several months and have a broad, general knowledge of all aspects of the position.
