Summary: | Consideration of sustainability in transportation system design, construction, operation, and maintenance techniques and practices has achieved greater acceptance as it seeks to achieve the triple bottom line of integrating environmental, economic and societal principles. The goal is to satisfy these principles by promoting the responsible use of natural resources while maintaining or improving the environment and simultaneously meeting the transportation project needs. Elements of sustainability practices include waste minimization, recycled/beneficial reuse of materials, traffic reduction, stormwater infiltration, and others. This webinar defines sustainability, identifies practices and techniques that others have employed for transportation systems, discusses some of the challenges and solutions to implementing sustainable practices, and presents references to obtain additional information.

Learning Outcomes: | Attendees of this webinar will obtain an understanding of the benefits of sustainable transportation systems. Through examples implemented by multiple Departments of Transportation, the goal is that design, construction, and maintenance personnel will consider sustainability practices in the projects – helping PennDOT lessen their impact on the environment and society, and recognize cost savings, and maintaining or improving the quality of the system.
