General Information

Summary:
D-CS Overview
Detection-Control System (D CS) is a decision zone protection technology developed by the Texas A&M Transportation Institute (TTI) for isolated, rural, high speed signalized intersections. The D CS design requires a speed trap on each lane located 800-1000 ft. upstream of the intersection stop bar. The system monitors approaching vehicles on a lane-by-lane basis and assigns different weights to trucks and non-trucks based on vehicle length. After receiving a service call from the minor approach, it uses the vehicle speed and length information detected by the speed traps to predict the best time to terminate the major approach green phase.
D CS employs a two-stage gap out strategy. In stage 1 mode, it predicts a future time when there will be no vehicles in the decision zone.

Learning Outcomes:
The audience should expect to learn about the following key contents:
• Determine the conditions where deploying D-CS will be most effective.
• How to evaluate the site specific conditions such as:
o Intersection geometric layout.
o Traffic demand pattern.
o Traffic mix of trucks versus non-trucks.
o Traffic accident history.
o Documented operational and safety issues.
• How to specify accuracy and latency requirements when considering candidate vehicle detection technologies.
• How to calibrate vehicle length and speed in the field.
• How to determine proper D-CS parameters based on traffic conditions.
• How to set up the signal controller in the field for D-CS mode.
• Suggest approaches to monitor, record, and evaluate the field performance of D-CS.

Awarding continuing education credits (PDH/CEU/CEH) to a training course or other training event does not imply or guarantee that the training course/event is approved by the Pennsylvania State Registration Board of Professional Engineers, Geologists and Land Surveyors.

According to Pennsylvania Act 25, “Credit determination for activities…shall be the responsibility of the licensee.  Continuing professional competency obtained by a licensee should maintain, improve or expand skills or knowledge obtained prior to initial licensure, including law and ethics applicable to the profession, or develop new and relevant skills and knowledge.”

For informational purposes only:1 CEU is equal to 10 hours of instruction
1 CEH is equal to 1 hour of instruction
