General Information

Summary:
3D model-centic process implementation for bridges is gaining momentum across the country. This course presents the basics of using this process with Bentley's OpenBridge Designer (OBD) software in support of the Department's Digital Delivery Directive 2025. An introduction to the software, creating a base 3D bridge model, and transferring that model data to complete the structural analysis of the bridge is all covered in this 2-day, hands-on course. The content focuses on workflows that apply to typical PennDOT structures including multibeam-slab bridges with prestressed beams and steel I-girders. The instruction utilizes the actual Bentley software and PennDOT workspace, so the attendees are expected to have these necessary software and workspace items installed in advance of the training start date.

Learning Outcomes:
1. Understand the basic functions of the OpenBridge Designer software suite and how to apply them in a model-centric workflow.
2. Create a base 3D bridge model in OpenBridge Modeler for both prestressed beam and steel I-girder superstructures following PennDOT standards and specifications.
3. Transfer the digital data from the 3D model to LEAP Bridge Concrete (LBC) and LEAP Bridge Steel (LBS) for analysis
4. Analyze the beams/girders in LBC and LBS following PennDOT Design Manual 4 specifications, review results, and identify further analysis required outside of this software.

Teaching Method:
Electronic training materials will be distributed prior to the training. Attendees will use their own computers during the training and interact with the trainers and classmates through a virtual platform. Instructions regarding software and workspace versions/downloads will be provided when registration is confirmed. Note that OBD is a commercially available software and licenses must be obtained for use; no training licenses will be provided for this course.

Prerequisites:
It is highly recommended that the attendees have some prior 3D modeling experience OR take several of the basic Bentley training/tutorial offerings before this course to be familiar with the user interface and tools.

Target Audience:
Target audience is designers with a minimal level of experience with superstructure design and 3D modeling. The course will be set up so that technicians can participate in the 3D model portion of the course only if desired.

Final Exam:
No
