General Information

Summary:
This course covers the Synchro signal timing software used to perform capacity analysis for signalized intersections, the SimTraffic microscopic simulation model, and 3D viewer. This course uses a combination of lecture and hands-on examples. Topics addressed include analysis of individual intersections, network analysis and optimization, advanced timing examples, universal traffic data format (UTDF), and optimization and calculations.

Learning Outcomes:
By the end of the session, you will be able to:
• Create a map of the street and intersections with and without the use of a background map (DXF or bitmapped).
• Enter the appropriate lane, volume, timing, simulation and detector information.
• Optimize individual intersection cycle length, splits and offsets.
• Optimize a network of signals for cycle length and offset.
• Display and modify Synchro’s time space diagrams.
• Understand the results displayed.
• Integrate Synchro data with the SimTraffic and 3D Viewer programs.
• Create reports to display timing information and measures of effectiveness.
• Understand the basic calculations used in Synchro to provide a better knowledge of what is being output by the program.
• Understand how optimizations are performed.
• Apply the additional features such as Universal Traffic Data Format (UTDF) and file merging.
• Create advanced examples of unique coding situations.
• Apply workarounds.

Teaching Method:
