General Information

Summary:
It is well known that Marcellus Shale development is having a significant impact on PennDOT roads. This presentation provides an overview of the mechanisms that cause pavements to fail, introduces the concept of “structural number” (SN) that defines the overall strength of pavements used in design, and describes methods to analyze existing pavements to determine their remaining life. A description of the Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD) and how it may be used to evaluate remaining life of in-service pavements will be presented. Additionally, an innovative new Rolling Wheel Deflectometer, recently developed by FHWA, will be described and its application to remaining life determination and network level pavement management will be presented.

Learning Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, the attendee will be able to:
1. Determine the structural capacity of a new pavement based on its composition.
2. Explain the mechanisms (environmental and load related factors) that cause asphalt pavements to fail.
3. Present the Equivalent Single Axle Load (ESAL) concept and how to determine the ESALs associated with common truck types.
4. Discuss the process used to estimate the number of ESALs that a pavement can withstand before it fails (or reaches the end of its serviceable life).
5. Explain how data from a Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD) or Rolling Wheel Deflectometer (RWD) may be used to determine structural capacity and remaining service life of existing, in-service, pavements.
