General Information
Summary:
This two-day seminar is an overview of a repair method for steel bridges called heat straightening and will address how to determine what damage is heat "straightenable". The course includes a demonstration of the technique to acquaint the engineer and the technician with the procedures involved in heat-straightening repair for damaged steel bridges.
Learning Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of the course, an attendee will be able to:
-describe how to avoid potentially damaging mistakes using heat-straightening repair;
-determine what damage is heat "straightenable";
-identify different heating patterns and use them to repair different types of damage;
-understand heat-straightening design;
-describe the behavior of rolled and built-up shapes during and after heat-straightening repair;
-describe the effects of heat-straightening repair on material properties;
-estimate the time necessary to straighten a bent piece of steel using heat-straightening repair; and
-inspect and supervise heat-straightening repairs.
Prerequisites:
A basic understanding of the properties of steel and steel design.
Target Audience:
Structural engineers involved with steel inspection, repair, and design.
Special Materials:
Attendees are asked to bring dark-colored safety goggles or sunglasses for eye protection during welding demonstrations.
Final Exam:
No
