General Information

Summary:
This workshop provides insights into applying the FHWA policy statement regarding requests for added access to the Interstate system. It also presents the fundamental information on geometric design, traffic analysis, and safety analayis needed for reviewing such requests.
This course has 12.0 contact hours.

Learning Outcomes:
Participants will be able to:
* Describe the eight points of the FHWA policy for additional access to the Interstate system
* Compare and contrast traffic operations and design attributes of different interchange types
* Review interchange alternatives anlayses and apply principles of freeway planning and design
* Review key geometric design features of ramps, terminals, alignment and cross section
* Describe the FHWA Interstate access approval process and delegation of authority
* Review the general contents of an Interchange Justification Report (IJR) and explain the components of a complete operational analysis, including the manner in which safety is assessed

Target Audience:
Field engineers, planners, safety and operations specialists, environmental specialists and leadership staff involved with the planning, development and approval of Interstate interchange projects.
