General Information

Summary:
In this seminar, you will learn how legal terminology differs from appraisal terminology and gain an understanding of the appraiser’s role in the legal system as an expert witness. You will receive an overview of the scope of activities performed by the appraiser in a legal action and the various assignments and litigation scenarios in which real estate appraisers may become involved. How appraisers act in condemnation, ad-valorem property tax actions, alternative dispute resolutions, and insurance matters are also covered.

Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of the seminar, participants will be able to:
*Discuss the legal system and the roles various members play.
*Understand the appraiser's role within the legal system and the characteristics of litigation-related assignments.
*Develop an understanding of the various rules of evidence and what is admissible by the court.
*Distinguish between words and terms used in a court versus those used in an appraisal context.
*Define the scope of activities provided by the appraiser.
*Reiterate the general principles and standards of practice that are important in appraising in a legal setting.
*Recognize the various types of assignments that come from the legal system and understand important aspects of the following:
