Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to:
1. Understand the global process for concrete box culvert design
including coordination between various disciplines and permitting
agencies.
2. Understand how decisions by or design constraints of one discipline
can change the options of the other disciplines.
3. Identify the best design solution to real-world situations.
4. Understand culvert limitations and when a bridge may be required.
5. Choose appropriate culvert end conditions (skewed vs. squared).
6. Understand the different design requirements in laying out a precast
culvert or a cast-in-place culvert.
7. Understand the different design requirements of “at grade” or “under
fill” culverts.
8. Select appropriate combinations of guide rail, headwalls, and
barriers above culvert.
9. Utilize methods that allow thinner culvert top slabs for at-grade
culverts.
10. Choose site appropriate culvert inlets.
11. Compile preliminary and final documentation.
