General Information

Summary:
This course covers operational procedures for Pipe Flushing and Pipe Replacement to ensure drainage systems are open and working properly. Applicable PennDOT standards and specifications will be discussed.

Learning Outcomes:
-List the reference documents and safety requirements to review prior to any drainage work
-Planning and scheduling process
-Determine condition of pipe and if it warrants replacement
-Ensure pipe slope is met for replacement
-Explain the installation procedures for concrete, metal, and plastic pipes
-Explain what backfill is and how it is used
-Discuss environmental issues and concerns
-Briefly discuss tail ditching and other aspects of the entire drainage system to promote drainage away from our road and bridges. Also discuss the impacts of poor drainage systems to the longevity of our assets and liability implications.

Target Audience:
Highway maintenance foreman, assistant county maintenance manager, crew members associated with the operation.
