Summary: | Caissons, or drilled shafts, are a type of structures’ foundation consisting of a concrete shaft (with or without steel casings and with or without rock sockets) formed within a drilled excavation. Caissons can be used when deep foundations are required or for stream environments where large cofferdams would be required, etc. This Webinar will provide the basic design considerations for caissons, including the costs. The construction of drilled caissons, including the equipment required, will be discussed. The inspection and construction issues of caissons will also be presented. Specific PennDOT project examples will be provided, along with PennDOT’s future direction for caissons.
