General Information

Summary:
This workshop will present alternative intersection and interchange designs that can help to address the issues of limited right-of-way, budget restraints, and incremental future development. These innovative solutions will help to address current and future congestion issues while maintaining safe and efficient operations. Four alternative at-grade intersection concepts will be discussed: restricted crossing u-turn, median u-turn, displaced left-turn, and quadrant roadway. Two alternative grade-separated interchange concepts will be discussed: displaced left-turn diamond and double crossover diamond. The discussion of these new concepts will include where they may be most appropriate compared to conventional intersections and interchanges.
This course has 6.0 contact hours.

Learning Outcomes:
Participants will:
* Learn new concepts and alternative configurations of intersections and interchanges to reduce congestion and improve safety.
* Learn key considerations and benefits, geometric design, traffic signal settings, and a planning intersection selection process that also includes roundabouts.

Target Audience:
Highway designers, traffic engineers, transportation planners and managers.

Final Exam:
Yes
